It will be two years for me this month since I started my Bikram Yoga practice. I have noticed so many good results in both my body and mind. I was unhappy and out of shape with a stressful job and I was steadily gaining weight over the years. Now my muscles all toned up so much that I can wear a size smaller in pants even though I have only lost 4-5 lbs. My knees have some arthritis but have improved enough that the usual pain and swelling is less noticeable after long walks or even backpacking. My mind and emotions seem to be calmer, too. Bikram is so challenging for me every single time and that is exactly what I need, besides a great instructor in you. I love it in class when, after we have worked so hard you say, "Relax, nothing to do but breathe"...very calming. Thanks again, Nada.

Several years ago I was involved in a horrible car accident. I was a passenger in the front seat of a car and after a slip on some ice and a skid across into the other highway lane, a truck came through my right door, which in turn pushed the door through my ribs, and my ribs through my lungs. I suffered a concussion, broken lower back, broke all my right ribs, a punctured lung, and injured my rotator cuff. I was not to have lived. After release from the hospital, I was not able to move and was in bed for many weeks. I was told it would be 9-12 months (depending) before I could return to work. The first 8 weeks I lay there and got to a point where I could walk to the kitchen and sit for meals. Week 9 following the accident, I went to a Bikram Yoga Class. I had never been ‘into’ yoga and am not the flexible type but thought I would give it a try. First day, I could not do anything, not even the breathing exercise, as I could not raise my arms over my head. I was unable to bend over and try to touch my toes as all my ribs and lower back were broken. I went just about every day and 4 weeks later, I was moving well and went back to work 9 months earlier than expected. I don’t understand how, but moving through the poses (even without the ability to do them well) saved me. I am a devotee, the Bikram Yoga practice is a miracle healer and will cure you of whatever ails you and then some.

Before Bikram Yoga, my body was hurting everywhere. I've been doing Bikram yoga for 8 years and now my body feels 20 year younger! When I just started it was really hard at first, really hot, and then started to be easier. The most unexpected benefit is that now I can deal with challenging situations so much better.

When I started doing Bikram yoga, I noticed that it helped me a lot with dancing and cheerleading that I was doing at school. Then I noticed that I can deal with stress at school so much better. All I do is breathe, one breath at the time, just like we learned at yoga class. Yoga helps me to go through a stressful day at school with more ease.

When I told my father about my first week at Bikram Yoga, he commented; “You must loose 1 to 2 pounds per class.” It took me close to three months to realize what the true meaning of loosing those pounds was. It translated in losing 2 lbs of stress, fatigue, back pain, insomnia, to name a few per class. Most importantly I was gaining 2 pounds of strength, clarity, mental and corporal definition. My appetite habits improved, I began to feel clam and comfortable in daily situations, I could handle

I found a source to clarity in a heated room while practicing 26 positions twice in a row for ninety minutes. I learned to keep a steady pace in life, stopped seeking for answers and started recognizing personal strengths and those of others. My joints started to belong to my body, instead of determining what and how much I could do. I understood how much love and keeping focused could make the day to day simple and serene. Most importantly, I have been attending for nine months and every day I feel better and better, engaged in life and happy.

As a guitarist, I thought I'd have to abandon my passion to play music due to severe pain in my hands and wrists. The pain was so great, I wondered in a performance situation if I'd make it through, which added stress to an already difficult situation. I found a masseur who specialized in helping athletes and dancers. After a few sessions that eased my pain, he encouraged me to begin a yoga practice to help me maintain the positive results. At that time I was also going through a crisis in my marriage, as well as work strain related to the war in Iraq, and beginning a yoga practice seemed like a good outlet. I often drove passed a Bikram yoga studio, so one day I attended a class and haven't left for over 3 years.

Bikram yoga has not only alleviated all pain in my hands and wrists but has helped me with mild scoliosis in my upper spine. It's also helped my left hip, which was often in pain from sitting in an odd classical-style position to play guitar. The list of benefits has continued to grow: more energy, improved digestion, mental clarity, plus those little intangibles like joy and laughter. It has greatly assisted me in my work and personal issues. I'm also able to play guitar for hours, pain free.

Although I began yoga for its physical benefits, I quickly began to sense its power to promote an inner sense of well-being. I continue to experience physical benefits but it's one of the last reasons why I keep coming back My main inspiration is the experience I have when holding a posture: in physical discomfort, I discover peace.
